{"id":254,"date":"2011-09-19T08:48:02","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T12:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.www.lumarinteriors.com\/blog\/?p=254"},"modified":"2011-09-19T08:48:02","modified_gmt":"2011-09-19T12:48:02","slug":"a-day-in-the-life-of-a-decorator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-decorator\/","title":{"rendered":"A day in the life of a decorator"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #fac904;\"><em><strong>I wish it\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>was like HGTV and it could all be \u00a0done in one day.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The reality is it takes months to put together a room, let alone a few rooms. \u00a0It starts with the planning: \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/decorating-services\/\">floor planning<\/a>, furniture selections, colour selections, fabric selections, accessories and lighting, area rugs&#8230;&#8230;this alone could take months.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4644\" style=\"width: 656px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4644\" class=\"wp-image-4644 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/designs-altogether-3.jpg\" alt=\"designs-altogether\" width=\"646\" height=\"485\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Putting It Altogether<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then the ordering. \u00a0For a single room, say a family room, you may need to contact 15 suppliers, workrooms, tradespeople etc&#8230; You do the math.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6 fabrics (sofas, 2 chairs, pillows, drapery)<\/li>\n<li>drapery workroom<\/li>\n<li>drapery hardware<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/window-coverings-curtains-drapes\/\"><span style=\"color: #141414;\">window blinds<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>upholstery manufacturer<\/li>\n<li>2 casegoods suppliers (cocktail table, 3 end tables, console, tv credenza)<\/li>\n<li>area rug supplier<\/li>\n<li>delivery company<\/li>\n<li>drapery\/blind installer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now multiply that by 4 rooms. \u00a0That is a lot of co-ordinating, emailing and phone calling. \u00a0(Yes, I&#8217;m not sure if my love of wine has evolved cause of the teenagers or the job&#8230;..hmmm, maybe a little of both).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/exasperated-fisheye-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-283\" title=\"Anger\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/exasperated-fisheye-1.jpg\" alt=\"exasperation\" width=\"298\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/exasperated-fisheye-1.jpg 298w, https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/exasperated-fisheye-1-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That is not including the calls in between from suppliers that tell you fabrics are on back order, trades that can&#8217;t do the work when you&#8217;d like, and manufacturers that tell you the furniture you&#8217;re waiting for is on a slow ship on the ocean! \u00a0 And don&#8217;t bother ordering anything late July early August from overseas cause that&#8217;s just not going to happen. \u00a0Summer holidays are taken very seriously in Europe and in the far east and well, you&#8217;ll just have to wait for September before they even look into it!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_270\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/shipping-forwarding-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-270\" class=\"size-full wp-image-270\" title=\"shipping-forwarding\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/shipping-forwarding-3.jpg\" alt=\"freight ship\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a long way to Canada&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So, day 1 of move in arrives. \u00a0Some of the furniture arrives: \u00a0family room casegoods, hall pieces, kitchen dining furniture, bedroom furniture. \u00a0A piece for the hall came in sooner than you expected. \u00a0(I guess that was an express ship). \u00a0And the sofas, well, they&#8217;re not ready. \u00a0(This took about 3 hours of set up)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4646\" style=\"width: 656px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4646\" class=\"wp-image-4646 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/family-room-furniture-3.jpg\" alt=\"family-room-furniture\" width=\"646\" height=\"485\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4646\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of the family room furniture arrives\u2026.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Day 2. \u00a0The electrician puts up the fixtures that have come in. \u00a0A few crystals missing and one broken-nothing surprising. \u00a0A call to the supplier and they&#8217;ll get replaced (with time). \u00a0Hmmm&#8230;.the little chandelier in the powder room looks like it will interfere with the door opening and closing. \u00a0Wow, 1\/2&#8243; to spare &#8230;pray for no earthquakes&#8230;.we can&#8217;t afford any movement here. \u00a0(These fixtures took about 5 hours to hang with me unwrapping and handing the electrician all the crystals).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4647\" style=\"width: 471px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4647\" class=\"wp-image-4647 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/crystal-lighting-3.jpg\" alt=\"crystal-lighting\" width=\"461\" height=\"615\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cHow many more crystals are we hanging?\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Day 3. \u00a0Blinds go up and kitchen and family room drapery are hung. \u00a0Dining room and bedroom drapery fabric is still on back order. \u00a0(Did I mention it is so nice to have wonderful, understanding \u00a0clients?) \u00a0(This installation took about 4 hours)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_265\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/IMG00046-20110829-1200-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"size-large wp-image-265 \" title=\"IMG00046-20110829-1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lumarinteriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/IMG00046-20110829-1200-3-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Drapery installer working hard\" width=\"614\" height=\"461\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One window at a time&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Day 4. \u00a0Ahh&#8230;the sofas and chairs arrive. \u00a0Now the clients have somewhere to sit other than a kitchen chair or bed! \u00a0We spend a little time deciding how we like the furniture arranged best. \u00a0We had two possible options using the same number of pieces&#8230;so time to play a little. \u00a0Finally, got it right. \u00a0Then rearranged the accent pillows to put the colour where it was needed. \u00a0We always make a couple of &#8216;drool&#8217; cushions (ones the family can actually lie down on, fall asleep and well, you know, drool) and a set of &#8216;pretty&#8217; ones which are not for sweaty, tired heads. \u00a0(Yes, they are to be used, just with more care) \u00a0Wait till you see them!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Day 5. \u00a0TV console arrives (now client can set up his 60&#8243; TV) and a couple more chandeliers arrive. \u00a0The crate that \u00a0is holding the hall chandelier looks like its a cage that would normally hold \u00a0a couple of guerillas. \u00a0Good thing there was room in the garage to store it until we can get the scaffolding arranged to hang it. \u00a0I&#8217;ve had a sofa not fit through an entry before but never a chandelier crate. \u00a021 years later and there are always &#8216;firsts&#8217; in this business. \u00a0You gotta love it!<\/p>\n<p>So, we&#8217;re still waiting for all the bedroom bedding and drapery, the dining room drapery and dining room furniture. \u00a0We haven&#8217;t started on the area rugs, accessories and art.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Four rooms, not quite finished and three months later. \u00a0No worries, we&#8217;ll get it done \u00a0before the holidays. \u00a0So much for a day in the life of a decorator&#8230;..but this is true reality. \u00a0Four rooms that need to be fully furnished and decorated takes time. \u00a0And sometimes the big &#8216;reveal&#8217; can&#8217;t be done all in one day. \u00a0It logistically just can&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>This client was living in a rental for a year until this new home was built. \u00a0We wanted to make her and her family as comfortable as possible as quickly as we could. \u00a0Within a week, the home was totally liveable. \u00a0Nowhere near fully decorated-just liveable.
