When beauty meets function in interior design
Whether designing a highly utilitarian room like a bathroom or a showpiece space like a living room, you know you’ve hit the sweet spot when beauty meets function.
A well-designed space brings these two elements together and illicits great feelings. The down-filled sumptuous sofa in the living room will likely draw people in to sit and relax. And the beautiful decorative drain you installed in your bathroom, not only does the job of making the water disappear from your shower floor, but it allows for a seamless look on your marble mosaic floor that you went to great lengths to choose. Alas, beauty meets function.
We’ve recently discovered a wonderful manufacturer of bathroom fixtures that embodies this perfectly. In fact, you can design your own faucets! You can combine different handles and faucets and choose from over 30 finishes: designer heaven! They use solid brass construction and ceramic disc valves with lifetime warranties in their faucets. So not only are they gorgeous but you know you can depend on them for proper function. (Have you ever bought a ready-made vanity that included the faucet and counter? Notice how inexpensive it was? That’s because it is what it is…when that faucet fails you, there is no fixing it. Throw it out and start over. Trust me – I know from experience.)

We have a new project starting next week in Newmarket, Ontario whereby the client needs to renovate a bathroom on the upper flat of a century home. The home was bought by a builder and turned into multiple condo dwellings. It’s historical features are beautiful preserved. I’m thinking one of these faucets will be perfect here. I’ll combine this raised neck faucet with delicately curved lever handles in a weathered antique brass finish. I have a feeling she’ll like the oil-rubbed bronze, but this is so much more interesting. Don’t you think? Go ahead and play around yourself – 30 finishes to choose from!
